GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS

  • ·         Wildebeest are African Bovid with broad shoulders, cow like horns, and a broad shoulder.

  • ·         The horns are curvy, have a shape, and are thicker in males than in females.

  • ·         They are uniquely marked by dark vertical stripes on the shoulders and back.

  • ·         In general, wildebeest have a mane and a beard, which is usually white to tan colored

HEAD TO BODY LENGTH : 170 – 240 cm ( 5.6 – 8.0 ft )

HORN LENGTH:  30 – 40 cm ( 1.0- 1.3 feet )  – females / 83 cm ( 2.7 feet )

Tail Length:  60 – 100 cm ( 2.0 – 3.3 ft )

SHOULDER HEIGHT: 115- 145 cm ( 3.8 – 4.8 feet )

WEIGHT: 140- 290 kg ( 308- 638 lbs )

RANGE: Only in Southwestern ,Eastern and Central South Africa

HABITAT: dense bush to open woodland floodplains

FOOD: Shrubs and trees

STATUS: .Even though the animal is threatened, it is still important to be aware of careful about this.

REASON FOR STATUS : They have been poached, the widespread of civilization and agriculture, and water resources

GESTATION PERIOD : 8 -8.5 months

LIFESPAN: 20 years in the wild / 21 years in captivity
