PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:

  • This species are reddish chestnut in color with a dark stripe on the back from the nose to the tail.

  • The lower legs are darker than the body.

  •  The face is short with a rounded or humped bare nose.

  • They have large scent glands beneath the eyes that include a series of pores rather than of a single opening.

  • Their brain relative to size is larger than all of the antelopes

  • They are the largest of the duiker species

HEAD TO BODY LENGTH:  115 – 145 cm (3.8 – 4.8 ft)

TAIL LENGTH: 11-20 cm (4.4 -8.0 in)

HORN LENGTH: 8.5 – 21.0 cm (3.4 -8.4 inches)

SHOULDER HEIGHT: 65 -80 cm ( 2.1 – 2.8 feet )

WEIGHT:  45 – 80 kg (100 -175 lbs)

RANGE : Western and Central Africa

 HABITAT: Forest, savannahs, and farmlands

 FOOD: fruits, seeds, grasses and fungi

 STATUS: Population is decreasing

REASON FOR STATUS : Hunting , and poaching

GESTATION PERIOD: 7 months

LIFESPAN: YRS IN WILD 10 -12 years /  22.50 YRS IN CAPTIVITY
