Description – The South American Spectacled Bear has excellent eyesight and gets its name from the markings around its eyes.
These markings are unique to each individual and can be used for identification.
Range -The Spectacled Bear lives in South America, Venezuela, Columbia, Ecuador, Peru, and West Bolivia.
Habitat –Â forests, savannas, and mountain areas.
Diet -The Spectacled Bear eats roots, fruits, berries, leaves, and sometimes insects.
Lifespan – 20-25 years in captivity
Status –Â Endangered : There are less than 2,000Â in existence at the present time
Reason for the status – Habitat destruction, fragmentation due to agricultural growth, and hunting by humans.
Gestation period – 240-255 days
Interesting facts – New born babies weigh only 300 – 325 gms and are blind at birth
