Short Finned

 

Physical Description

They are black in color. Some have light gray or white patch on the chin. Lighter gray markings on chest. The dorsal fin is very large. The pectoral fins are more curved and are 1/6 the body length than the other species. They have muscular body with thick tail stock.

General Characteristics 

Head to body Length : 4.7- 6.5 meters ( 15.4 – 21.3 feet )

Dorsal Fin Height  – 30 cm ( 11.8 in )

 Fluke: 130 cm ( 51.2 in )

Range :  There are four recognized stocks in u.s ( west coast , Hawaii, northern Gulf of Mexico and Western North Atlantic.

Habitat:  They prefer warmer tropical and temperate waters.

Diet.  : Mollusks, fish ( mackerel , cod and turbot)

Status:  This species has been rapidly decreasing due.

Reason for status:  Meat, Bone, fertilizer and oil

Gestation:  11-13 months

Longevity:  46 years – males /  63 years – females in the wild
