Physical Description

      They have a long, sleek body that is dark bluish-gray to black in color and pale underneath

General Characteristics 

Head to Body Length: 40 – 60 feet ( 12 – 18 meters )

 Fin length

  Dorsal Fin Length : 1/3 of its body length

Pectoral flipper : 12 m – 15 m ( 39 – 49 ft )

Fluke : Is relatively small

 Range:  Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans

Summer : They are commonly found in the Gulf of Maine, and on Georges Bank and Stellwagen Bank in the western North Atlantic.

Habitat: : Subtropical to Subpolar regions

Diet.  :   They eat plankton (like copepods and krill), small schooling fish, and cephalopods (like squid)

Status:  Endangered.

  •  They estimate that the current worldwide population is about 80,000 individuals.

  • After commercial whaling exhausted all known populations of this species, sei whales in the North Atlantic and North Pacific are considered to be relatively abundant by scientists say.

  • The population in the Southern Ocean remains greatly depleted.

Reason for status: Commercial hunting and whaling, meat, and oil

Gestation :  10.5 – 12 months

Longevity:  74 Years in the wild
