Rhea

 

 

  • Rheas belong to the family ratites.

  • There are two species of rhea that are found in South America in grassland

  • They are the Greater and Lesser Rhea.  Rheas are tall, long-legged birds, well adapted to a ground lifestyle.

  • They are good runners. and go to speeds of up to 60 km/h.

  • Their body is grayish-brown, and the sexes are not very dimorphic, though males develop a black ring on the neck.

  •  Their feathers lack hooks, making them unusually soft.

  • Unlike the similar-looking ostriches, the head, neck, and thighs of rheas are feathered.

  • They do not have tail feathers.
