Red Lechwe

 

 

General Characteristics

  • They are medium-sized antelopes.

  • The color of this species of lechwe is chestnut with white underneath, throat area, and markings in face.

  • They have dark leg and body marks.

  • The black to red coloring is different between species (Red and Nile).

Head to body Length :  130 – 180 cm ( 51- 60 in )

Tail Length : 30-45 cm ( 12- 18 in )

Horn Length :  45-92 cm ( 18 -37 in )

Shoulder Height : 85 -110 cm ( 33 – 44 in )

Weight :  60 -130 kg ( 132 – 286 lb )

Range – South Central Africa

Habitat – Flooded Plains near swamps, rivers and marshes  

Food – grasses, water plants

Status – Threatened.

Reason For Status : Loss of habitat due to habitat destruction and Oil Exploration

Gestation :  7 – 8 months

Lifespan : 12 -15 yrs in wild / 21 yrs in captivity
