Nile Lechwe

 

General Characteristics

  • They are sexual dimorphic.

  •  Males and females can easily be distinguished from one another based on color and size.

  • However, both males and females have longer narrow legs.

  •  They have a short nose, and a long tail. Females are pale yellow, do not have horns

Head to body Length :  160 -180 cm ( 63 – 71 in ) males / 130 – 170 cm ( 51 – 67 in ) – females

Tail Length : 45 -50 cm ( 18 – 20 in )

Horn Length :  50 – 87 cm ( 20 – 34 in )

Shoulder Height : 100 – 105 cm ( 39 – 41 in ) – Males / 80- 85 cm ( 31- 33 in ) – females

 Weight : 90- 120kg ( males ) 60- 90 kg ( females )

Range – Southern Sudan , and Ethiopia in Africa

Habitat – Swamps , dry and flooded grasses marshes and steppes  

Food – grasses , herbs, and water plants

Status – The population is decreasing

Reason For Status :  Habitat loss and hunting

Gestation :  7.85 average

Lifespan :  10.75 captivity / 19 years in captivity
