General Characteristics

Adults have thick, black skin, and are only sparsely covered with brown to blackish hair.

They also have white or yellowish-white hair on their forelegs, and sometimes on their throat and nape.

The horns of an adult are triangular in section, flattened and wrinkled.

The horns begin at the forehead and point diagonally backwards.

Tail Length : 40 cm ( 16 in )
Horn Length : 18- 37 cm ( 7- 14.5 in )
Shoulder Height : 85 cm ( 2.8 ft )
Weight : 300kg ( 660lbs )
Range – Northern Region Island of Sulwesi
Habitat – Lowland forested areas and swamps
Food – Aquatic plants, ferns, grasses and saplings, fallen fruit, palm and ginger
Status – Endangered. This population used to be widely spread ( above 5,000 ).
Now there population is drastically decreasing.
There are only 5,000 remaining in the wild.
Reason For Status : Illegal hunting, and habitat destruction
Gestation : 9- 10 months
Lifespan : 30 years in the wild / 31 years in captivity
