LONG FINNED PILOT WHALE

 

Physical Description  

Their head has a large round “bump”. This bump varies with age and sex, and in some animals it can form a crease.

General Characteristics 

Head to body Length: 

Males : 25 Feet ( 7.6 meter)

Females :  19 feet ( 5.8 feet )

Fin length:

Dorsal fin : The broad-base small “dorsal” fin is thick, curved, divided, and is located about a third down the body behind the head. As the animals age, their dorsal fin becomes broader and rounder.

Pectoral fin : a pair of Sickle shaped long pectoral fins are present in this species that gives them their name.

 Fluke:    approximately 5 feet (about 20 % of body length

 Range :  Northern & Southern Hemisphere ( Greenland, Iceland ,  North  Sea , Mediterranean Sea . The southern group of

Habitat: Both pelagic and coastal aquatic biomes.

Diet.  : Mollusks, fish ( mackerel , cod and turbot)

Status:  Population is declining in most of it’s distribution

Reason for status: Commercial fishing and habitat loss

Gestation:  12-16 months

Longevity:  males – 46 years / females – 59 years in the wild / 60 years in captivity
