BEISA ORYX ( EAST AFRICAN ORYX)

 

 

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS 

  •   They are dark brown to black in color· 

  • Males being darker in color than females.

  • They  have an area of longer, dark hair between the forelegs, covering the chest this species.

  • They have a patch of bristly black hair along the bridge of the nose.

HEAD TO BODY LENGTH : 160 -190 cm ( 5.3 – 6.3 ft )

HORN LENGTH: 75 – 120 cm ( 2.5 – 4.0 ft )

Tail Length:  70 -80 cm ( 2.3 – 2.6 ft )

SHOULDER HEIGHT: 110 -120 cm ( 3.6 – 4.0 )

WEIGHT: 150 – 200 kg ( 330 – 440 lbs )

RANGE: Eastern Africa

HABITAT: Semi – desert and brush savannahs

FOOD: leaved plants, wild melons and roots.

STATUS: .This species is reducing in population in the wild,

REASON FOR STATUS : Poaching for meat, habitat destruction,

GESTATION PERIOD : 8.5 – 10.0 months

LIFESPAN: 18 years in the wild/ 22 yrs in captivity
