ARGALI SHEEP

 

 

Physical description

  • Argali Sheep also known as Mountain Sheep

  • The general color of the coat is light buff to darker grayish brown

  • In older males they have whittish color hair

  • The face is lighter in color

  • Males have whittish  color neck which circles around the necks surface

  • They have a whittish rump patch

  • They have Corkscrew like horns

General Characteristics

Length : 120 – 200 cm ( 4.6 – 6.0 feet )

Shoulder Height : 90 – 120 cm ( 3 – 4 feet )

Horn length: 30 cm ( 1 foot)

Tail length:  14 cm ( 5.6 in)

Weight: 65- 180kg ( 143 – 396 lbs )

Range: Mountain areas of Central Asia ( Siberia, south to Himalayas to Tibet, near Afganistan ,and eastward toward the Mongolian Plateau )

Habitat: Mountain areas

Diet: Grasses herbs and Sedges

Status They are declining in numbers in  the wild over past 200 years and even now.

Reason for the status: Overhunting, Poaching, dieases transmisson from other domestic sheep and habitat destruction

Gestation period : 150 -160 days

Longevity :     10 – 13 years in the wild /  16.8 Years in captivity
