ARABIAN ORYX

 

 

 

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:

  • A large antelope, with white color coat on its body.

  • They have black markings on its face

  • Legs are brown to black in color.

  • They have long ridged horns

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS             

HEAD TO BODY LENGTH:  160 cm ( 5.3 ft )

TAIL LENGTH: 45 -60 cm ( 1.5 – 2.0 feet)

HORN LENGTH:  50-68 cm ( 1.6 -2.2 feet )

SHOULDER HEIGHT: 81- 102 cm ( 2.7 – 3.4 feet )

WEIGHT:  65 – 70 kg ( 143- 154 lbs )

RANGE :  Syria, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Sinai, and the Arabian Peninsula

 HABITAT: Arid Plains and deserts

 FOOD: Grasses and shrubs

 STATUS :  Even though, they have been taken from endangered species list.

 They are now threatened. It is still important to take care of them

REASON FOR STATUS : Hunting for horns and habitat destruction

GESTATION PERIOD:  255-260 days

 

LIFESPAN: YRS IN WILD : 20 years in the wild / 20 years in captivity
