Physical Description

  • The Javan rhino is a dusky grey color.

  •      The skin has a number of loose folds giving the appearance of amour plating.

  •     This species is very similar in appearance to the closely-related Indian rhinoceros, but is slightly smaller, with a much smaller head and the skin folds less apparent than in the Indian rhino.

  •     Recent evidence suggests that the horn may be absent or very small in females.

  •     The upper lip is pointed and can be used to grasp food and bring it to the mouth.

General Characteristics

Length :  6 – 11.5 feet ( 2.0 -4.0 meters )

Horn length : 10 inches ( 25 centimeters ) only males. Females have no or smaller horn.

Weight : 2,000 to 5,060 pounds ( 900 to 2,300 kg )

Height : 5.0 -5.5 feet ( 1.5 – 1.7 meters )

Range : Java and Vietnam

Habitat : Low lying Tropical Rainforest

Diet : fruit, leaves twigs and bark

Status :There are only currently 37 – 48 Javan Rhinos remaining only in the wild.

Reason for the status : habitat destruction, diseases has affected this population

Gestation Period15 to 16 months

Lifespan – 30 to 45 years in the wild /  20 years in captivity
