Physical Description

They have a thin, shaggy coat that is reddish brown in color.

Males have large cheek pads, which are made up of deposits of subcutaneous fat bound by connective tissue.

Orangutans have short, weak legs, but strong hands and arms.

Weight :  Male : 60 -90 kg  / female : 40- 50 kg

Range – Once distributed  widely in South East Asia.
But is today restricted solely to the island of Borneo with the largest population located in Kalimantan, the Indonesian part of the island
Habitat – Lowland and hilly tropical rainforest
Diet – 400 types of food, including wild figs and durians ,When fruit is scarce however, orangutans will feed on leaves, seeds and even bark
What type of animal :Â Herbivore
Status – Borneo in 1997 and 1998Â estimated that around one third of the island’s orangutan population was lost at this time. 80% of Orangutans population have been destroyed
Reason for the status – illegal logging , pet trade, gold mining
Gestation Period – 233 to263 days
Lifespan – 50 years in the wild / 60 years in captivity
