BONTEBOK

 

 

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS 

  • They  have a dark and glossy, purplish-brown dorsal  while dorsal pelage is a dull, reddish-brown.

     

HEAD TO BODY LENGTH : 140 -160 cm ( 4.6 – 5.3 ft )

HORN LENGTH: 35 – 50 cm ( 14 -20 in )

Tail Length: 30 – 45 cm ( 12 -18 in )

SHOULDER HEIGHT: 85 -100 cm ( 2.8 – 3.3 ft )

WEIGHT:  55 -80 kg ( 121 -176 lbs )

RANGE: Only in Southwestern ,Eastern and Central South Africa 

HABITAT:  Grasslands and Coastal Plains

FOOD:  Short grasses

STATUS: There used to be only 17 Bontebok, Now they are extinct in the wild, except you will find them only in protected areas like in zoos.

REASON FOR STATUS : They have been killed for pests, habitat destruction, and hunting

GESTATION PERIOD : 8 months

LIFESPAN: 17 years in the wild / 21 years in captivity
