Physical Description

  • Although the color of black rhinoceroses can vary from yellow-brown to dark-brown, the general color is grey.

  • Specific skin color depends on the soil conditions within the habitat of each individual.

  •  The skin is naked or hairless, with the exception of short, fringe-like hair on the short and rounded ears.

Length :  3.0 -3.8 meters ( 10 -12.5 feet )

Horn length

Anterior – 0,5 to 1,3 m (1 ft; 8 in – 4 ft; 4 in)

Posterior  – 0.02 to 0.55 meters ( 1- 22 inches )

Weight : 800 – 1,350 kg ( 1,750 – 3000 lbs )

Height : 1.4 to 1.7 meters ( 4.5 – 5.5 feet )

Range : Namibia, South Africa , Zimbabwe , Zambia and Malawi, Tanzania and Kenya

Habitat : Grasslands, Savannahs , and tropical bushlands

Diet : Plants, Branches and Shoots

Status :There used to be 70,000. Now there is 3,610 only

Reason for the status : This is due to poaching and habitat destruction

Gestation Period – Around 15 to 16 months

Lifespan – 30- 40 years in the wild / 35 years in captivity
