PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:

  • Sitatunga have a water-proof coat which is dark brown in males and reddish brown in females.

  • Both sexes have white stripes and spots as well as white splotches on their faces.

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS             

HEAD TO BODY LENGTH:  Male  : 88 -125  cm ( 35 -50 in ) Female 75 -90 cm ( 30 -26 in )

TAIL LENGTH: 20-25 cm ( 8 – 10 in )

HORN LENGTH:  45 -90 cm ( 18 – 36 in )

SHOULDER HEIGHT: 75 – 125 cm ( 2.2 -4.1 ft )

WEIGHT:  40 – 120 kg ( 90 – 260 lb )

RANGE :  Victoria, Congo, and Zambezi and Okavango river System                 

HABITAT: Swamps , Reedbeds and Marshes

 FOOD: Leaves, fruits buds, and grasses

 STATUS : There used to be 170,000 . Its slowing decreasing in the wild rapidly

REASON FOR STATUS : Loss of habitat , and bush meat

GESTATION PERIOD:  7.5 -8 months

LIFESPAN: YRS IN WILD  : 17 -20  years – captivity / 10 -15 years in the wild
