Sambar Deer

 

  • A Sambar is a large species of deer which is native south and southeast Asia.

  •  It  is sometimes referred to as Philippine Deer also known as Rusa Deer.

  •  They have large rugged antlers that are typically curved to tip.

  •  Their shaggy coat is yellowish brown to dark grey in color.

  • They have a dense mane which seems to show epically in males

  • The tail is long and black with whitish underside

TL : 22-35 cm ( 8.7 – 14.0 in )

SH : 102 – 160 cm ( 40 – 63 in )

RANGE : southern Asia , Himalayan mountains, southeast Asia ( Burma, Thailand , Indo

china , Malay peninsula , Taiwan , the islands of Borneo and Sumatra in Indonesia

HABITAT : tropical rainforest to himalayan foothills

DIET : grasses, foliage, fruits and water plants

Status : population is decreasing in the wild. Vulnerable

Reason for status : habitat encroachment, and hunting

Gestation : 8 to 9 years

Lifespan : 26 years in captivity / 20 years in the wild
