Roan Antelope

 

 

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:

  • Their skin is grayish-brown with a hint of red.

  • The legs are darker than the rest of the body.

  • Young roan antelope are much lighter and reddish-brown.

  • The head is dark brown or black, with white around the mouth and nose, large white patches in front of the eyes and pale patches behind them.

  • The ears are long and narrow, with dark brown hair at the tips.

  • Roan antelope have a mane consisting of short stiff hair that is black at the tips.

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS             

HEAD TO BODY LENGTH:  220- 260 cm ( 8.8 ft )

TAIL LENGTH:  60 – 70 cm ( 2.0 -2.3 ft )

HORN LENGTH:  60 – 100 cm ( 2.0 -3.3 ft )

SHOULDER HEIGHT: 140-160 cm ( 4 6 – 5.3 ft ) 

WEIGHT:  225 -300 kg ( 495 -660 lb )

RANGE :  South Sahara to Botswana in Africa

HABITAT: Slightly wooded country and grasslands

 FOOD:  Medium High grasses and rare leaves

 STATUS : In most of the areas except private land everywhere else it is decreasing

REASON FOR STATUS : Poaching, habitat destruction and expansion of settlement

LIFESPAN: YRS IN WILD  : 17 yrs  – captivity / more than 17 years in the wild
