Ratites

 

 

  •  A Ratite is a large, flightless bird which belongs in the family Ostrich Emu, Cassowary, Rhea

  • and Kiwi .

  •  All are now endangered species except the Emu.  

  • Unlike other flightless birds, the ratites have no breastbone because they do not fly.

  • They can be found in the Southern Hemisphere and their closest living relatives are the tinamous

  • of South America.

  • They have many physical characteristics that are common.

  • They have simplified wing skeletons and muscles.

  • Their legs are stronger and do not have air chambers, except the thigh bone.
