DALL’S SHEEP

 

Physical Characteristics

  • Males are about 40% heavier than females and have thick curly horns

  • Females are smaller and have  slender less curly horns.

  • These look very similar to big horn sheep.

  • Dall sheep are white allover their body.

Length : 60 – 70in (150 – 180 cms)

Horn length:  25 to 35 in

Tail length: 4in (10 cm)

Weight: 46 – 113 Kgs (101 – 250 lbs)

Range: Western Canada and United States (Alaska, Yukon Territory, North West British Columbia)

Habitat: High Mountain Ranges

Diet: Grasses, sedges and forbs

Status: Threatened more so in British Columbia (only 500 remain)

Reason for the status: Hunting

Gestation period : 5.7 months

Longevity : 10.5 yrs  in the wild, 20 yrs in captivity
