Physical Description

  • §  Colobus monkeys are medium-sized, arboreal monkeys with slender bodies and long tails.

  • Another name for colobus monkey is kikuyu monkey

  • §  Angolan colobus monkeys have long, silky hair.

  • §  They are black with a white brow band, cheeks, and throat.

  • §  They have long-haired white epaulettes on the shoulders and the lower half of the tail is white

General Characteristics

Length :   45 – 72 cm ( 17.72 – 28.35 )

Tail Length :  100 cm

Weight : 5 – 14 kg ( 11.01 – 30.84 lbs )

Range : Equatorial Forest

Habitat : Forests, woodlands, wooded grasslands and rainforest.

Diet : Stems , bark, flowers, buds, fruits, shoots, aquatic plants, and insects.

Status : Populations are rapidly declining in some areas such as as the Kakamega Forest in Kenya

Reason for the status : Habitat Destruction and hunting for bush meat and skins

Gestation Period  : 147 – 178 days

Lifespan : 20 years in wild / 30 years in captivity
