CALAMIAN DEER

 

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:

The Calamian deer is also known as Hog Deer. Its coat is brown in color with males generally darkening with age.

It also has subtle markings below the neck area. It has long legs.

The short  tail is bushy and has a white undersurface.

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS

HEAD TO BODY LENGTH:  105 – 115 cm (3.5- 3.8 ft )

TAIL LENGTH: 20 cm ( 8 in )

HORN LENGTH:

SHOULDER HEIGHT: 60 -75 cm ( 2-2.5 ft )

WEIGHT: 36-50kg (79 -110lbs )

RANGE: Palawan islands in the Western most Philippines

HABITAT : Swampy Areas close to marshes, rivers and tall grasses        

FOOD: leaves

STATUS: Endangered. Only 900 of this deer species remaining in the wild

REASON FOR STATUS: Hunting pressure and human settlement

GESTATION PERIOD:  180 days ( 6 months )

LIFESPAN: 10-20 years in wild and captivity
