Artiodactyls ( Even-Toed Ungulates ) are mammals are carried evenly by third and fourth digits, which is a diagnostic characteristic of this order. This is known as being paraxonic. This first digit is not there, the second and fifth digits are reduced are absent in this order. All Artiodactyla except camel, walk on the tips of toes which is called unguligrade. They mostly have encased hooves. The bones of limbs and feet are connected with the muscles of the legs close to the body. The bones of limbs and feet are connected with the muscles of the legs close to the body. They are superb runners.
Pigs, camels, hippopotamuses, giraffes, deer, cows, sheep, goats and antelopes belong to this order. This is the most successful order of hoofed animals. They are found throughout the world except Australia, New Zealand, Antarctica, and some isolated islands.
Artiodactyls are divided into two groups: the non-ruminants and ruminants. The non-ruminant animals are pigs, peccaries, and hippos. The ruminant animals are the camels, giraffe, deer, pronghorn, antelope, sheep, goats, and cattle. Most non ruminants have molars and hill shaped teeth, which are not used in herbivorous diet as are molars for ruminants. This group has non cud chewing stomachs of two chambers, except the hippos that have four chambers.
The Artiodactyls diet consist of grasses and woody material of relatively low nutritional amount. They get the maximum amount in their diet. Their cheek teeth are used for grinding materials. The stomach is a complex digestive system.
