MOUNTAIN  GOAT

Physical Characteristics

·         Mountain goats are bodied with a thick coat made up of white hairs with some brown areas in the dorsal area.

·         The pure black horns are rather thin, are on both males and females.

·         They do not shed these horns.

·         The male’s horn has curves back greater than the females.

·         Mountain goats have large, oval shaped hooves with an almost rubber-like sole that helps them in climbing steep rocks.

Length: 140 – 155 cm (4.7 -5.1 ft)

Horn length: 20 -25 cm ( 8-10 in )

Tail length: 10 cm ( 4 in )

Shoulder height: 80 – 90 cm ( 2.6 – 3 .0 feet )   

Weight: 56.7 – 69.0 kg ( 124 – 152 lbs )

Range: Southeast Alaska to Washington, Western Montana, and Central Idaho

Habitat: Steep, rocky areas with cliffs or sub alpine regions

Diet: Grasses, woody plants, mosses, lichens, and other vegetation

Status – Even though this population is stable, its always good to maintain them. But the population in Cascade Mountains is decreasing.

Reason for the status: hunting and habitat destruction

Gestation period: 147 days

Longevity:  12 -15 years in the wild / 16 -20 years in captivity
