Maxwell’s Duiker

 

 

 

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:

 

They have short legs and an arched back and stand.

 Females have be larger in length and weight than males

The pelage of is grey or grey-brown and paler on the animal’s underside.

They are more uniform in color than closest relative blue duikers, which are more sharply bi colored and bear areas of white fur on their butt.

They have short, bushy tails with a fringe of white fur around the edges.

 Two white stripes run symmetrically down an animal’s head from its horns above its eyes, to its nose.

They have small, pointed horns that extend backwards from the rear of the skull.

Horns are there in both males and females come out in the male when it is about two and a half months old

 

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS             

HEAD TO BODY LENGTH:  63 – 73 cm ( 25 -30 in )

TAIL LENGTH: 12-15 cm ( 5-6 in )

HORN LENGTH: 5 cm ( 2 in )

SHOULDER HEIGHT: 25-42 cm ( 14 – 16.5 in )

WEIGHT: 5-10 kg ( 11 -22 lb )

RANGE : Senegal to Southwestern Nigeria

 

HABITAT: Lowland forest

 

FOOD: Leaves , Shrubs, and herbs

 

 

STATUS: Near Threatened, but population is still decreasing so people have to be careful

REASON FOR STATUS : over human hunting

GESTATION PERIOD: 120 days

 

LIFESPAN: YRS IN WILD – 12 years in the wild  / 10 years in captivity
