GRAY WHALE

 

Physical Description

  • The Gray whales have no dorsal fin

  • But have dorsal hump that are 6 – 12 bumps on the back.

  • They have gray color and are covered with gray – white patterns with parasites left.

General Characteristics 

Head to Body Length: 16 feet ( 4.9 meters )

Newborns : 45 feet (14 meters )

Pectoral flipper:  4 – 5 feet ( 1.2 – 1.5 meters )

Range

Migration pattern :  Summer ( They go from Mexico to Alaska )

                                  Winter  ( They go from Alaska to Mexico  )

Habitat: Live at the surface of the ocean near the coastline

Diet.  :   Eats small fish, crustaceans, squid , and other tiny organisms.

Status:  The population in north atlantic is extinct , and one is critically endangered in Western north pacific that has 130 remaining.

Reason for status: habitat loss, ship strikes,  and environmental change

Gestation:  11 -13 months

Longevity: 50 – 60 years in the wild
