CAPEW ATER BUFFALO

 

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS             

  • T The African Cape buffalo is a huge animal with a large head, arms, legs and wide chest.

  • ·   They have big droopy ears.

  • ·   The horns are either widened out, down, up, or out and back.

  • ·    Size varies between subspecies of the African buffalo.

  • ·    The coat color ranges from brown to black.

HEAD TO BODY LENGTH:  1.70 – 3.40 M (

TAIL LENGTH:  0.7 – 1.1 M

HORN LENGTH : upto 1.6M

SHOULDER HEIGHT: 1.00 – 1.7 M

WEIGHT:  300 – 900 Kg  (660 – 2000 lbs)

RANGE :  South of Sahara to Northern South Africa                                 

HABITAT: Open woodlands near rivers, lakes and swamps

 FOOD:  grasses

STATUS : Not threatened but population is decreasing

REASON FOR STATUS : Habitat destruction due to human activities

GESTATION PERIOD:
