Sumatran Orangutan

Physical Description

  • Orangutans have long, fine red hair on their bodies and faces.

  •  Males have large cheek pads that are covered in a fine white hairs.

  • The arm span, from finger tip to finger tip, is 2.25 m.

  • The legs are small and weak compared to their muscular arms.

  • Sumatran Orangutans have more sparse and lighter colored coat than the Bornean species

General Characteristics

Length :  78 cm Female Head Body Length  Male – 97 cm Head Body Length

Weight :  Male : 60 -90 kg   / female : 40- 50 kg

Tail  Length : none

Range –  They used to be Widespread throughout South East Asia. 

Today, however they are found only in the north of this island in the Indonesian archipelago

Habitat – Lowland tropical rainforests and swamps up to 800 meters above sea level.

Diet   They eat Fruit makes up about 60% of their diet, with the remainder being young leaves (~25%)flowers and bark (~10%), insects, mainly ants, termites, and crickets (~5%), and an occasional egg.  One of their important foods are figs.

What type of animal : Herbivore

Status  Their habitat has decreased over 80% in the last 20 years. Reasons below have estimated decline in the orangutan population of 30 to 50% in the last 10 years.

Reason for the status – Illegal logging , legal logging in Sumatra, hunting, habitat destruction, and illegal pet trade.

Gestation Period – 233-265 days

Lifespan – 35 days in the wild / 50 yrs in captivity
