Striped Hyena

Physical Characteristics

  • The hind legs of the striped hyena are heavier and shorter than the forelegs.

  • The head is broad with pointed ears.

  • The color of the coat varies from gray to light brown with vertical black stripes along the length of the body.

  • On the back there is a conspicuous, darker erect crest.

  • The legs also have dark stripes on them.

General Characteristics

Head to body Length : 3.5 – 4 ft

Tail Length :  10-18 in

Height : 2 -3 ft

Weight : .55-121 lb

Range – E and North Africa through Middle East to Arabia, India, SW USSR

Habitat –  Drier rocky areas with desert or thick brush

Food – Carrion, insects, birds, fruit and seeds

Gestation :  84 days

Lifespan : 25 years in wild/ 24 years in captivity
