General Characteristics

Length :   Male – 6.5 to 8.3 feet / female –  5.8 to 6.5 feet

Weight  : Male – 880 – 1320 pounds / Female – 440 to 770 pounds

Description  :

  • The polar bear is the largest of the  bear species.

  • Coloration is usually white can become yellowish due to exposure to ultraviolet light

  • Thick coat protects the bear in winter. Small ears also helps against bitter cold weather

  • It is an omnivorous animal.

Range – Circumpolar arctic : Northern most part of continents of Americas, Europe and Asia

Habitat – Sea ice and waters, islands and coasts

Diet – Mostly seals, also walrus, beluga, narwal, small mammals

Status -Currently listed as threatened but their numbers are reducing due to global warming and low population growth

Predators – Humans, mountain lions, other bears and wolfs

Reason for the status – Global warming

Lifespan – 25 years

Gestation period – 240 days
