Mountain Tapir

 

Physical Description

  •  This species is very black or dark brown in color, with occasional pale hairs flecked in amongst the darker fur.

  • Most noticeable feature is its snout and upper lip that project into a short, fleshy proboscis with nostrils at the tip.

General Characteristics

Length : 1.8 meters ( 6 feet )

Tail length : 50 cm ( 1.5 feet )

Weight : 330lbs ( 150kg )

Shoulder Height : 0.75 to 1.0 meter ( 2.5 to 3.3 feet)

Range : Andes Mountains of Northwestern South America, Ecuador and Colombia

Habitat : Temperate and cloud forest and dense sub tropical regions

Diet : Leaves, twigs, buds, and low hanging fruit

Status : Endangered

Reason for the status : Poaching for meat , and Habitat Destruction

Gestation Period – 392 to 393 days

Lifespan Up to 30 years
