INDIAN GHARIAL

Physical Description

This has a characteristic long snout. The only other animal which is closer to this is the false gharial which actually belongs to the alligator family.

General Characteristics

Length : 10-16 feet ( 3-5 meters )for males  9-12 feet  (2.7-3.7 meters) for females

Weight : 350- 550 lbs ( 160 – 250 kg )

Range : Area of Ganges River in India to Myanmar (Burma). Presently only in India.

Habitat : River

Diet : Fish

Status : Critically Endangered (population reduced by 98% since 1946). Currently there are only two to three hundred

Reason for the status : Over hunting,  Habitat Destruction

Gestation Period – 60 – 80 days

Lifespan 29 years
