FALSE GHARIAL

False gharial is also known as Malayan Gharial and belongs to the alligator family. They are also called as Tomistoma.

Physical Description

They are dark reddish brown above with black or brown spots on the back and tail. They have a slender snout.

General Characteristics

Length : 12 to 13 feet ( 3.6 to 3.9 meters )

Weight : 420-460 lbs ( 190 – 210 kg )

Range : Malaysia, Sumatra and Borneo

Habitat : Rivers, swamps and lakes

Diet : fishes and possibly larger animals such as monkeys

Status : Endangered

Reason for the status : Hunting and Habitat Destruction

Gestation Period – 90 days

Lifespan 30 years
