PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:

This hyena species is long , hairy, shaggy hair which is usually dark brown to black on the body

They are brown on shoulders and on their neck

Their ears are larger and pointer than the other two species

Their tail is short and bushy
HEAD TO BODY LENGTH:130-160 cm (51 – 63 in)
SHOULDER HEIGHT: FOR BOTH SEXES 79 CM (31 in)
WEIGHT: MALES (47 kg – 103 lbs) FEMALES (42 kg – 92 lbs)
RANGE: Limited to mainly southernmost Africa – Kalahari and Namibia deserts as well as the Skeleton Coast near the South Atlantic ocean
HABITAT: Arid to Semi-arid grassland and savanna at below 1500 m altitude; found also in desert regions where the rainfall is less than 100 mm annually.
FOOD: (CARNIVORE): Mostly scavenger feeding on carrion but also hunt if necessary for small birds or animals
STATUS: Endangered
REASON FOR STATUS: Loss of Habitat, killing by humans for protection against livestock.
GESTATION PERIOD: Â 3 months
LIFESPAN:   12 years  in wild / 13 years in captivity
